Vacuum solutions from a single source

Detection of gravitational waves by the LIGO observatories: Pfeiffer Vacuum in an interview with LIGO co-founder Prof. Dr. Rainer Weiss
In September 2015, the LIGO observatories in Louisiana and Washington, USA, detected gravitational waves directly on the Earth for the first time and thus confirmed Einstein’s theory in the limit of strong field at the source – a breakthrough for astrophysics. Vacuum technology played a crucial role in the spectacular measurements at LIGO. Solutions from Pfeiffer Vacuum were involved in the measurements of both the LIGO observatories and the connected basic experiments.

Tips and tricks from the experts

Common errors when using turbopumps and how to avoid them
When selecting and operating a turbopump, it is not rare that considerable errors are being made. They can easily be avoided by considering the specific parameters valid for the individual pump type. Here, you find the most important information and insights for the operation, equipment selection, and maintenance of commonly used turbopumps.

Further tips and tricks for the use and operation of vacuum technology and leak detection as well as interesting references and applications are available at our vacuum solutions website.

Did you know?

Calibration of vacuum gauges and helium test leaks
The quality of each production process depends on the accurate control of measuring instruments. Chapter 7.6 of the quality management standard ISO 9001:2008 requires the control of monitoring and measuring instruments. Accordingly, all measuring instruments must be regularly calibrated against to standards that are traceable to national or international standards. We meet this requirement with our global calibration laboratory for vacuum measuring equipment at the Asslar site. Here we calibrate our own products.
